LED Bulb Technology

LED Bulb Technology

The impact of the World’s energy consumption is an area of increasing importance and scrutiny.

As technological advances are made to meet consumer demands, there is rightly a more heightened sense of where long term environmental impact is heading. No less so with lighting technology. Here the advances have been considerable over the last decade with the development and refining of LED lighting technology. This has seen a gradual move away from the traditional incandescent halogen filament bulb, with LED providing a considerable leap forward in terms of energy efficiency and lumens per watt output. With the added bonus of LED units lasting longer, the prospect of switching to LED for most household consumers is very much a viable one for many reasons.

LED technology impacts the consumer in a number of ways…

The advantages…

1. Efficiency.

LED lighting works by passing electricity through a p–n junction diode that emits light when activated. This process is called electroluminescense. A standard LED bulb requires half the power of it’s halogen equivalent whilst providing three times the output.

2. Durability.

LED units are generally much more durable than other lighting technologies. Whilst initial outlay may cost slightly more per unit, in the long run, LED outlasts older tech by a distance with typical lifetime estimate of between 25,000 to 100,000 hours.

3. Flexibility.

Working on a wider variety of circuits, LED units are more flexible than halogen, they can survive power surges and irregularities in current with greater robustness.

4. Filament Bulb Technology.

With the development of bulb filament technology, LED lights are no longer refined to flat circuit boards alone. Filament bulbs are readily available. They look like a traditional bulb but perform with all the benefits of LED.

The Disadvantages…

1. Lack of Regulation?

As is often the case with new technology there can be a lack of regulation often surrounding less reputable suppliers. At MiniSun Trade we regulate and test all our LED products to the highest standard. If you buy it from us you can trust that it’s best in class and fully regulated.

2. Blue or Synthetic Light Output?

One criticism is that LED light output can appear synthetic and/or flicker, giving out a blue hue. Again this only applies to cheaper models with correctly developed units providing crisp clean cool white and an appealing amber light from ‘warm white’ bulbs.
