LED & the Environment Part 2
LED V halogen bulbs
In September 2018 the EU legislation has seen the beginning of the end for halogen bulb manufacturing and importation throughout Europe. China has also recently banned the exportation of halogen bulb technology. Australia to are also aiming to phase out halogen bulbs by 2020. The obvious ‘go to’ replacement is undoubtedly LED and with the UK still currently part of the EU this legislation counts here to. And of course, LED technology brings with it many benefits.
The main reasons for the switch is efficiency and environmental impact. A recent study by the Energy Saving Trust indicates that a single halogen bulb uses around £11 worth of electricity annually. It’s LED equivalent uses just £2 over the same period, that’s an approximate saving of £112 per annum. LED bulbs typically have an estimated lifespan of 15 to 20 years while most halogens, it’s thought will fail after just 2.
The switch to LED from halogen is in most cases a smooth one with LED’s ability to handle anomalies in electrical current strength with greater durability. Choosing the right LED bulb for the job is critical, i.e. dimmable LED bulbs are available but must be used with compatible trailing edge dimmer switches, is one example. The correct set up advice is of course necessary. While LED technology is intially, slightly more expensive than it's halogen countepart, once installed correctly the technology will outperform and outlast it's predecessor by a long way.
In conclusion, the demand for LED lighting technology is growing and set to increase over the next few years as demand is raised by the liquidation of the old halogen technology.
